I picked up these beauties at the local thrift store. I had an urge to refinish some furniture, but I didn't want to spend a ton of money doing it.
After searching all around the store, I ran across these. They were marked $59.99 with 50% off. It was a no brainier, I HAD to have these tables. I had originally planned on painting them white with black knobs. But, after a lot of Pinterest searching and reading many DIY tutorials, I decided I wanted to try my hand at white washing.
The tutorials I read said to use a latex based paint, and at 1/4 cup of baking soda to get a thick consistency. If you wanted to add a color other than white, mix a latex based paint color with the baking soda. I thought about adding the baking soda, but a lot of my projects I've tried to do haven't came out so well when I added something to them, so I decided to stick with white. Once I started painting these tables, I realized I wasn't even going to have to add the baking soda to get the white wash style.
I started with the top of the coffee table first, and it started streaking it looked like, but the more I painted, the more the white wash started to come out. I just started swiping my brush across the wood, and I'm happy with what I came out with, before I added the handles.
This is the finished product on the coffee table:
I love the bottoms of this piece.
I am still in the process of painting table number 2, but I will follow with a post tomorrow, with a picture of it finished ;)
I also looked around and ran across a couple things I could see potential in. As far as redoing them. I read a blog that was really inspiring about Thrift shopping and really seeing potential in something. The lady had a few things to keep in mind.
1) When you head to a thrift store, you have to keep as open mind. Like I mentioned above, if you can't see potential in something, it will most likely never work out, and
you'll end up hating it.
2) If you walk in a thrift store and don't find anything, its probably not your day for thrifting.
I found this mirror, that I instantly loved.
I have a paint color called Sage by Valspar, and I think its going to look really good on this mirror.
I have no idea where I am going to put it, but it was something I couldn't pass up.
I also found a small shelf that I really liked, but again, I have no idea where I'm going to put it. My decor in my bedroom is light blues and whites, so if I decide to put it in there, I'm thinking of a light blue color.
I found another black shelf that I will probably put in my bathroom somewhere. I'm not sure if I'm going to refinish it or not. I have a towel stand in there already that's black, so I'm thinking it will fit right in as is. All it needs is a little cleaning ;)
Next up on my list is to find hubby and I a nice dresser, and Chester drawer. I'm hoping to find a great deal like I did on these, but I know that will most likely take a lot of searching! I'm really excited to go by a store here in Knoxville, you can find the link here.
From what I've heard, and seen on the site, it looks like the kind of place I'm looking for! Fingers crossed I will have found some things tomorrow. I will post with an update!
Thanks for reading,
